Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
